Giving Tuesday | A Few of My Favorite Places to Donate
Today is Giving Tuesday!!
I have to be completely honest with you, I am not in love with Black Friday or Cyber Monday. I completely understand that it is a great time to buy Christmas gifts or get deals on things you already needed, but I don’t love it.
But, I’m not here to talk about my dislike for either of those days. I simply want to bring your attention to Giving Tuesday! I love the idea of this day because it is such a great opportunity to donate your time, talents, or finances. It’s an opportunity to be generous and remember to love our neighbors in very tangible ways. Obviously, those sentiments are not true just for this one day each year, but I think it’s a great reminder to us at the beginning of the holiday season.
In case you are interested in participating in Giving Tuesday but are not sure where to start, I’ve gathered up three of my favorite ideas for donations!
Wipe Every Tear provides women with real hope for a better future by offering a way out of sexual exploitation. By building trust through genuine relationships, facilitating holistic healing, providing a safe place to live, and job opportunities through education, we walk alongside each woman as she transitions out of the sex trade into a new life of freedom.
Safe Houses are an integral part of Wipe Every Tear’s mission. Our homes are places of refuge, rest, and healing. By fostering each woman’s physical, emotional, and spiritual healing, we provide what they need for a successful future. Our precious women receive good meals, weekly allowance, daily transportation funds, and more… she really has all she needs for a transformed future.
Education is essential to Wipe Every Tear’s mission. Having a quality education allows women to create a brighter future for themselves and their loved ones. In many areas, a college degree or vocational training means the ability to find a job that can sustain a family for life. Therefore, we believe education is key to breaking the chains of sex trafficking.
Charity: Water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. 100% of each donation goes to their water projects and you can track exactly what every dollar you donate actually does. Bringing clean water to people looks different in each country. Water sources, terrain, and population all play a part in determining what technology is required to serve people well, but there’s a solution to everything.
663 million people in the world live without clean water.
That’s nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide. Or, twice the population of the United States. The majority live in isolated rural areas and spend hours every day walking to collect water for their family. Not only does walking for water keep children out of school or take up time that parents could be using to earn money, but the water often carries diseases that can make everyone sick.
But access to clean water means education, income and health - especially for women and kids.
Clean water changes everything.
Radio Milwaukee is my favorite radio station. They play a wide variety of music and promise to play something by a local Milwaukee artist at least once an hour. They also have a separate station that streams Milwaukee music 24/7. They believe in Milwaukee—as it is today and in its potential to become even better. Through their multimedia community stories, they explore Milwaukee history and the people who are making it every day. They take a lot of pride in our culture. Sure, part of it is the beer-brats-bowling stereotype. They laugh along with that, but they know our culture is much more. A big part is our music scene, though we have a lot of other unique “scenes” too—food, technology, art, performance, film, sports, local business, education, nonprofits and activism to name a few—and this is where they cover them all.
Today is also a chance to either volunteer or pick out what volunteer opportunities you can be part of in the coming months. A few local Milwaukee options are:
